Pakistan Committed to Policy of Business Facilitation, Export Diversification: Minister

KARACHI: Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan on Monday reiterated the government’s commitment to policy of facilitating trade and industry and export diversification, saying that measures were being taken to promote local as well as export-oriented industries.

The minister, while addressing a media briefing at the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) in Karachi, said that the government was determined to bring institutional and structural reforms, resolve problems about tariffs and energy, enhance regional connectivity, and diversify exports for ensuring sustainable development and stabilizing the economy.

He said that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has conducted several meetings with relevant ministries and stakeholders to discuss a range of issues so that a comprehensive strategy could be devised to do away with all the challenges being faced by the business and industry in the country.

He added that different high-level committees were also set up to look into matters like governance reforms, energy pricing, promoting coordination among all relevant ministries and stakeholders coherence in policies and initiatives and give solutions to the confronting challenges.

Jam Kamal Discusses Special Committee on Energy Pricing Mechanism

Jam Kamal informed that the special committee on Energy pricing mechanism was instructed by the prime minister to submit its recommendations after due consultation with the business community within ten days.

Underlining the initiatives for promoting export diversification, he said that positive results have been achieved from the Food and Agriculture exhibition, TDAP’s ‘Pakistan Trade Portal’, and other such measures, and the export volume of food and agriculture sectors has increased exponentially.

The total export of the food and agriculture sectors is likely to cross 7 billion dollars in the current financial year on the back of a manifold increase in the export of rice, maize, sesame seed, and other agricultural products, he added.
