ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Saturday conveyed condolences over the loss of lives and property caused by heavy rains and flash floods in Afghanistan.
According to a statement issued by Pakistan Foreign Office, the government and citizens of Pakistan extended their sincere sympathies on the tragic loss of life and extensive property damage caused by heavy rains and flash floods in various provinces of Afghanistan.
“Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the deceased, the injured, and the communities impacted by this natural disaster, and we hope for the swift recovery of those still missing,” the statement read.
Pakistan reaffirmed its solidarity with the Afghan people during this challenging period.
Meanwhile, more than 200 people were killed in flash floods that ripped through several Afghan provinces, the United Nations (UN) said on Saturday, as officials declared a state of emergency in most parts of the country.
Earlier, local officials said that around 60 people have been killed in recent floods and heavy rains in Baghlan province of Afghanistan, local media reported on Saturday. Local official Hidayatullah Hamdard said that the floods caused losses to people property and houses in several districts of Baghlan. The Taliban’s spokesman for the State Ministry for Natural Disaster Management Abdullah Janan Saiq said that the flash floods also hit Kabul, said. He stated that the rescue workers are making efforts to provide foods and other aid to the flood-hit areas.
Saiq maintained that the rescue operation is the main focus of rescue officials at the moment, and that he later might be able to provide updated figures on damages and casualties. As per media reports, rescue workers were “searching for any possible victims under the debris, with the help of security officials, he said. The officials said that dozens of tents, food and blankets were provided to those who lost their houses in the recent floods in the country.
Videos seen on different plate forms of social media showed huge torrents of muddy water swamping the streets and roads.
In a statement, Interim Government of Afghanistan spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said that the authorities would provide aid to flood-affected areas in the country.
