ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has made the decision to send its cricket team to India for the upcoming One-Day International (ODI) World Cup, scheduled for October and November this year. The announcement came after weeks of uncertainty over Pakistan’s participation in the tournament, as the government had initially delayed approving the team’s visit to India, citing security concerns.

In a statement issued by the Foreign Office (FO) on Sunday, Pakistan reiterated its stance of not mixing sports with politics and expressed its commitment to fulfilling its international sports-related obligations. The FO also acknowledged that it had deep concerns about the security of the cricket team during their visit to India.

Pakistan’s Conditional Participation in ODI World Cup

The decision to participate in the World Cup was conditional on the Indian cricket team’s visit to Pakistan for the Asia Cup. A truce was eventually reached, and Pakistan agreed to host the Asia Cup in September on the basis of a hybrid model. However, Pakistan still sought government clearance for any tour to India, including World Cup match venues.

The Foreign Office stated that Pakistan had conveyed its concerns regarding the safety and security of the team to the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Indian authorities. The statement emphasized the expectation that full safety measures would be ensured during the team’s visit to India.

This decision by Pakistan showcases a constructive and responsible approach despite India’s initial intransigent attitude. India had previously refused to send its cricket team to Pakistan for the Asia Cup. Pakistan’s participation in the ODI World Cup is seen as a positive step in improving bilateral sports relations between the two countries.

The announcement brings relief to cricket fans and players alike, as uncertainty over Pakistan’s participation had created apprehension in the cricketing community.
