Pakistan Delays PTI Ban, Article 6 Proceedings Against Jailed Imran Khan

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s government, led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, on Wednesday deferred the federal cabinet approval to ban the main opposition party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.

The federal cabinet also deferred reaching a conclusion on initiating Article 6 proceedings against PTI founder chairman and former Prime Minister Imran Khan, former president Arif Alvi, and former deputy speaker of the National Assembly Qasim Suri.

According to local media reports, the ruling party Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz seeking further consultations with coalition partners, including its major ally Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). Therefore, the matters were deferred until the next cabinet meeting.

Earlier, Shehbaz Sharif’s government had announced its intentions to proceed with a ban on PTI and pursue Article 6 cases against its top leadership.

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar had said that the government will take various measures such as blocking the passports and identity cards of Imran Khan, Arif Alvi, and Qasim Suri, alongside a parliamentary resolution and actions within legal frameworks.

The ruling party’s decision to ban the main opposition, led by jailed Imran Khan, came to light after the Supreme Court’s July 12 decision resurrected PTI and mandated the allocation of its shares in the 170 reserved seats for women and minorities in the National Assembly and provincial assemblies.
