ISLAMABAD: The Punjab government has launched a pioneering initiative using artificial intelligence (AI) technology to detect vehicles emitting excessive smoke, aiming to curb environmental pollution and enforce traffic regulations effectively.

On the directive of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, transport authorities have implemented a system utilizing advanced cameras equipped with AI technology through the Punjab Safe City project in Lahore. This system is designed to monitor and penalize vehicles emitting smoke beyond permissible limits.

The initiative targets a wide range of vehicles including trucks, buses, cars, wagons, auto-rickshaws, and motorcycles. The Lahore Traffic Police have already issued hundreds of electronic challans based on AI-driven detection of smoke emissions, each accompanied by photographic evidence of the violation.

Senior Punjab Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb emphasized that the use of modern technology is crucial for environmental protection and ensuring strict adherence to traffic rules. She affirmed the government’s commitment to expanding this initiative across Punjab in phases.

“This initiative aligns with our broader strategy to combat air pollution and promote cleaner transport options,” Aurangzeb stated.
