NEW YORK: Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN Munir Akram has said that veto powers at the UN Security Council’s (UNSC) have failed to bring peace in Gaza and Ukraine.
He told the media that they are trying to limit the veto power of the permanent members. He said that there are both pros and cons of permanent membership of the UNSC. He opposed the addition of another permanent member to the UNSC.

Urging for more non-permanent elected seats in the UNSC, the Pakistani diplomat said that the UNSC should comprise 27 members with a majority of developing countries.
Five UNSC permanent members have veto power including France, China, the UK, Russia, and the USA. These nations have vetoed resolutions hundreds of times with Moscow using the power 125 times and Washington 82 times. It may be recalled that US also vetoed several resolutions regarding Gaza since October 7.
Earlier, Brazil has withdrawn its envoy to Israel after Tal Aviv said that Brazilian leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was not welcome in the country.
Brazilian foreign ministry also confirmed the Israeli envoy was summoned after Israeli officials gave Brazil’s envoy to the country a formal reprimand following Lula’s statement.
