Pakistan Elected to UN Highest Council
Pakistan received 129 votes during the elections in the UN General Assembly. Pakistan was contesting one of 3 Asian seats — also being contested by Japan, Iraq, Tajikistan, and Nepal. As per the rules, a two-thirds majority was required for the election.
After the victory, Pakistan’s envoy said they were gratified at Pakistan’s success in a highly contested election. He said, “Our success is an acknowledgment of Pakistan’s significance and its positive role in global diplomacy,”. Munir Akram hoped to play yet once again their active role in the forum of ECOSOC by fostering a deal on the equitable structure of international economic cooperation.
He added that Pakistan would also help develop consensus on the steps for recovery from the present crises and revive the aspects of achieving the SDGs. He appreciated his team at the Pakistan Mission to the UN for their hard work in securing this election.
Earlier, Pakistan had served ten times at the ECOSOC forums. ECOSOC, a major UN organ, coordinates social, economic, and related work of the fourteen UN specialized departments, functional commissions and 5 regional commissions. The forum is responsible for promoting full employment, higher standards of living, and economic and social progress; identifying solutions to global economic, health and social problems; facilitating global cultural and educational cooperation; and also encouraging universal respect for human rights.
