ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said on Monday that heavy monsoon rain is expected to hit the country from 3 to 9 July 2023.

There is a risk of heavy flooding in areas still recovering from the devastating floods of last year, it warned.

The climate change has badly effected the South Asian countries as large swathes were submerged last year due to melting of glaciers and heavy monsoon rains that resulted in massive floods. The floods in 2022 have caused damage to crops, infrastructure as well as killed at least 1,700 people.

The PMD said that heavy rain and thunder is expected from Monday in Islamabad, Peshawar, Lahore, and will spread to other areas as well until Saturday.

It was also warned by the weather office that heavy rain may cause urban flooding in low-lying areas of Islamabad, Peshawar, Lahore, and Gujranwala with a risk of landslides in the hilly western areas of Murree, Galliyat, Gilgit Baltistan and Kashmir later on during this week.

Pakistan receives aid commitments

Pakistan has received more than $9 billion commitments from international donors to help recover from last year’s floods with the rebuilding efforts that are estimated to cost of $16.3 billion.
