ISLAMABAD: Pakistan expressed profound grief and condolences on Sunday over the tragic loss of lives and extensive damage caused by a devastating earthquake that struck the western regions of Afghanistan on Saturday.

In an official statement, the spokesperson for the Pakistani foreign office conveyed Pakistan’s heartfelt sympathies to the families of the victims and offered prayers for the swift and complete recovery of the injured.
“The Government and people of Pakistan are deeply saddened by the devastating earthquake in Western regions of Afghanistan on Saturday, resulting in tragic loss of life and widespread damage to property,” the statement read.

Expressing unwavering solidarity with the people of Afghanistan during this challenging time, Pakistan assured its full support to assist in the recovery efforts. The statement highlighted that Pakistani authorities were in direct communication with their Afghan counterparts to assess the immediate needs of those affected by the earthquake.
“We are in contact with the Afghan authorities to get a first-hand assessment of the urgent needs of those affected by the earthquake. Pakistan will extend all possible support to the recovery effort,” the statement emphasized.
Earthquake Destruction in Afghanistan
According to the Taliban administration, the earthquake’s toll stood at more than 2,000 fatalities and over 9,000 injuries. The seismic event, centered 35 km northwest of the city of Herat, included one quake measuring 6.3 in magnitude, as reported by the US Geological Survey (USGS). The disaster caused extensive destruction, leaving 1,320 houses damaged or destroyed.
Janan Sayeeq, spokesman for the Ministry of Disasters, confirmed the grim statistics, adding that most of the casualties were women and children. Ten rescue teams were actively engaged in the affected area, which borders Iran, to aid in search and rescue operations.
Pakistan reiterated its commitment to stand by Afghanistan and provide necessary assistance during the recovery process, emphasizing the importance of regional cooperation and solidarity in such challenging circumstances.
