ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Federal Ministry of Education on Sunday announced an extension of the summer vacation for federal government educational institutions, extending the break until August 4 due to the severe heat and humidity currently affecting the country. According to the notification issued by the Federal Ministry of Education, the new school reopening date has been set for August 5.

The decision comes in response to the extreme weather conditions that have engulfed the Federal Capital and other regions. According to the notification issued by the Federal Ministry of Education, the extension aims to safeguard students and staff from the adverse effects of the ongoing heatwave.

“Due to the intense hot and humid weather in the district, i.e., Federal Capital (Islamabad), it has been decided to extend summer vacation in ICT schools/colleges till August 4, 2024,” the notification stated. The schools and colleges will resume classes on August 5.

The extension reflects a growing trend of adapting school schedules to the challenging weather conditions. Last week, the Sindh Education Department also announced an extension of the summer vacation for schools in the province until August 14, citing similar concerns over the prevailing heat.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a warning of strong monsoon currents penetrating the region, with rain, wind, and thunderstorms expected from July 28 to 31. The PMD’s statement on Friday noted, “Strong monsoon currents are likely to penetrate from the Arabian Sea into the upper parts of Pakistan from July 27 night and into central and southern parts from July 29.”
