ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s security forces on Monday thwarted an infiltration attempt by a group of the banned Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) terrorists at the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, killing nine terrorists, sources said.

According to sources, Pakistan’s security forces launched a targeted operation based on credible intelligence, which revealed that TTP terrorists were attempting to illegally cross into Pakistani territory from Afghanistan.

The forces detected the terrorists’ location using advanced night-vision technology. The military engaged the terrorists, eliminating them with precision using a variety of weapons, including Cobra helicopters, which were deployed to target those hiding in difficult terrain.

According to sources, the Pakistan Army’s Cobra helicopter was used with great precision and the terrorists hiding in difficult places were targeted.

The incident is part of border infiltration and terrorist attacks in Pakistan by the TTP terrorists. Pakistan has been consistently urging the Afghan authorities to prevent TTP terrorists from using Afghan soil to plan and execute attacks against Pakistan.

This is not the first time Pakistan’s security forces have foiled infiltration attempts along the border. In previous weeks, similar attempts were thwarted in the Sambaza area of Zhob, where six terrorists were killed on the night of January 22/23. A large cache of weapons, ammunition, and explosives were also recovered. On January 19, five terrorists were gunned down during a similar confrontation in the same region.

According to a recent UN report, the Afghan Taliban continues to provide logistical and financial support to the TTP, which has intensified its attacks on Pakistan. The report, released on February 6, highlighted that more than 600 attacks took place in 2024, mostly planned and launched from Afghan territory.

In the report, the UN stated that the Afghan Taliban had been providing monthly payments to TTP leader Noor Wali Masoud, which has helped bolster the terrorist group’s operational capacity.

Furthermore, the TTP has established new training centres in Afghanistan’s Kunar, Nangarhar, Khost, and Paktika provinces, expanding its recruitment and training infrastructure.

Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have continued to rise as the Afghan Taliban’s support for the TTP remains a significant concern for Islamabad.

The UN Security Council report also pointed to the increasing collaboration between the TTP and other militant groups in the region, including Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS), with joint attacks under the banner of Tehreek-e-Jihad Pakistan (TJP).

Meanwhile, a skirmish broke out on Monday evening between Pakistani security forces and Afghan Taliban at the Kodakhel border point in Mohmand district. Both sides exchanged heavy fire for around 40 minutes, though no casualties were reported, official sources said.
