Pakistan Hockey Team Receives Hero’s Welcome on Return Home

LAHORE: The Pakistan hockey team returned home to a hero’s welcome on Saturday following their commendable performance in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup 2024, where they clinched the silver medal after a thrilling final against Japan.

Despite narrowly losing to Japan in the final on penalties, the Pakistani team received accolades for their remarkable journey in the tournament. Japan emerged victorious in the nerve-wracking penalty shoot-out, securing a 4-1 win over Pakistan after both teams remained deadlocked at 2-2 at the end of full time.

The Sultan Azlan Shah Cup 2024 marked Pakistan’s first appearance in the final after a hiatus of 13 years, showcasing their resurgence in international hockey.

Upon their arrival at Lahore, the Pakistan hockey team was greeted with enthusiasm and jubilation by fans and officials. Rana Mashhood Ahmed Khan, Chairman of the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme, extended a warm welcome to the players.

The players were met with a large crowd at the airport, adorned with garlands and bouquets, while supporters displayed placards and banners expressing their pride and congratulations for the team’s performance.

Speaking to journalists, Rana Mashhood praised the team’s resilience and determination throughout the tournament, highlighting their unbeaten record until the final match. He affirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the team in future events, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif inviting the players to the PM House to honor their contributions.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced a reward of Rs1 million for each player as a token of appreciation for their efforts and dedication to representing Pakistan on the international stage.
