ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman, Imran Khan, said Wednesday that he would announce the dissolution of both Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provincial assemblies on December 17.

While addressing the nation via video link, Imran Khan made the announcement after consultations with his party’s leadership and allied parties.

The PTI Chairman said he would announce the date for the Punjab and KP assemblies’ dissolution during the party’s rally at Lahore’s Liberty Chowk.

Political scenario after assemblies’ dissolution

Khan’s address came after consultation with senior leadership of PTI on important political and economic issues.

“Once we dissolve the Punjab and KP assemblies, we will hold elections in the respective provinces. He said that 123-125 National Assembly members of PTI — whose resignations are not accepted — will ask the National Assembly speaker at the assembly floor to accept their resignations.”

Following these steps, Imran Khan said as much as 70 percent of Pakistan would be heading towards elections; as per the law, elections should be held within 90 days of the dissolution of the assemblies.

Assemblies’ dissolution and general elections : Imran Khan

“Logic dictates that the country should move towards general elections if 70% of Pakistan will see elections.”

“However, unfortunately, our political leaders are convicted and corrupt. Political leaders do not care about Pakistan; when bad times take over, they will leave Pakistan,” Imran Khan said.

Imran Khan said the coalition government was worried that if they stepped down, and another government was formed, then the new government would reopen their corruption cases.

The PTI chief said no country can progress without rule of law and justice as he claimed that Pakistan was on the “brink of destruction” as there was “no rule of law.”

“Why are we here? Because the poor people are in jail as powerful people are receiving NROs, getting their cases closed, and coming back to the country,” the ex-prime minister said.

Khan said documentaries have been shot and books written on the corruption of two families that belong to the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).
