ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Minister of State for IT and Telecommunication, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, emphasized the importance of innovations in data networks, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and 5G for Pakistan’s economic growth and its ability to tackle significant challenges in healthcare, education, and sustainable development.
Speaking at the SANOG-42 Conference, she stressed the need for regional cooperation to enhance the country’s digital infrastructure and develop inclusive, secure, and sustainable technologies.
Khawaja reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening the IT and Telecom sectors through various initiatives. “We have established IT Parks in Islamabad and Karachi and are supporting over 1,300 startups through our National Incubation Centers. Our Digital Pakistan Policy focuses on boosting e-governance, cybersecurity, and entrepreneurship,” she stated.
She acknowledged the telecom sector’s crucial role in the national economy and mentioned the upcoming 5G spectrum auction set for early 2025. Alongside initiatives like the National Fiberization Policy and Spectrum Sharing, these efforts aim to accelerate growth.
The minister highlighted Pakistan’s impressive advancements in cybersecurity, which have positioned the country among the top nations in the ITU 2024 Global Cybersecurity Index. “This progress reflects our commitment to all pillars of cybersecurity, aligning us with leading countries in readiness,” she said.
She also pointed out that IT sector exports have exceeded $3 billion, with initiatives like local Chromebook manufacturing by Google and the transformation of Islamabad into a Model Digital City showcasing the country’s dynamic IT landscape.
“We are committed to training young people, especially in cybersecurity, to ensure a skilled workforce for the future,” remarked Khawaja.
She outlined comprehensive policies aimed at enhancing access, affordability, and innovation to ensure sustained growth and global competitiveness.
The minister called for strengthened partnerships across South Asia, leveraging SANOG’s experience for policy alignment and capacity building. “Our focus remains on optimizing Internet Exchange Points and enhancing network resilience. We welcome international partnerships and investments to further propel the growth of our IT sector,” she added.
