NEW YORK: Pakistan and the Marshall Islands formalized diplomatic relations during a formal ceremony held at New York on Friday.
Pakistan’s UN Ambassador Munir Akram and Marshall Islands’ Ambassador Amatlain Elizabeth Kabua signed a joint communiqué to establish diplomatic ties between their countries.
The signing took place at the Pakistan Mission to the UN and was attended by diplomats from both nations.
The Marshall Islands, an independent country since 1986, is situated in the central Pacific Ocean, known for its volcanic islands and coral atolls.
Ambassador Akram described the occasion as ‘auspicious’ and highlighted the existing cooperation between the two nations at the United Nations. He emphasized the importance of deepening cooperation and recognized the Marshall Islands’ significant role in the establishment of the Loss and Damage Fund.
Ambassador Kabua expressed privilege in representing her country at the formal start of a friendship and partnership journey with Pakistan. She noted the excellent understanding between the missions of the two countries, citing common positions on issues such as climate change and UN Security Council reform.
Ambassador Kabua expressed eagerness to work closely with Ambassador Akram to strengthen the bond of friendship between Pakistan and the Marshall Islands. She appreciated Ambassador Akram’s strong advocacy for the cause of small island nations at the United Nations.
