Pakistan Met Department Forecasts Subsiding Heatwaves from June 18

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Friday forecasted a welcome respite from the scorching heat as days-long spells of isolated rain are expected to bring relief to the country starting from Tuesday, June 18.

According to the latest weather advisory issued by the Met Office on Friday, isolated showers are expected across Pakistan as moist currents from the Arabian Sea are predicted to penetrate the upper and central parts of the country.

The advisory highlights the likelihood of a shallow westerly wave approaching western regions of Pakistan on June 18, contributing to the anticipated rainfall.

Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir are expected to experience rain accompanied by thunderstorms during the evening of June 15 and the morning of June 16. However, hot and dry weather conditions are expected to persist in these areas for two days following Saturday.

A subsequent wet spell with thunderstorms, interspersed with occasional gaps, is forecasted for parts of Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir, including Diamir, Astore, Ghizer, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, Ghanche, Shigar, Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Poonch, Hattian, Bagh, Haveli, Sudhanoti, Kotli, Bhimber, and Mirpur, from June 18 to June 22. Heavy rainfall is also expected in Kashmir during this period.

Similarly, thunderstorms and rain are anticipated in various parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) on the evening of June 15 and the morning of June 16. Very hot and dry weather is expected to prevail in southern parts of KP from June 16 to June 18. However, the intensity of weather is expected to subside in several regions of KP from the night of June 18 until June 22, following intermittent showers.

Punjab, including Islamabad, Murree, Galliyat, Rawalpindi, Bhakkar, Faisalabad, Sahiwal, Okara, Kasur, Nankana Sahib, Lahore, Hafizabad, Mandi Bahauddin, Wazirabad, Sialkot, Narowal, and Gujranwala, is also expected to experience similar weather conditions, with a reduction in heat intensity anticipated after intermittent rainfall from June 18 to June 22.

Meanwhile, most parts of Balochistan and Sindh are likely to continue experiencing intense heatwaves until June 20. However, rain accompanied by dust and thunderstorms is expected in several areas of Balochistan from June 20 to 22, while isolated rain-thunderstorms are forecasted in Sukkur, Jacobabad, Kashmore, and Larkana in Sindh on June 21 and 22.

The Met Office has issued warnings regarding lightning, gusty winds, and the vulnerability of electric poles, loose structures, solar panels, and vehicles. Authorities have been advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to prevent any untoward incidents during the forecasted period.
