Pakistan Minister Calls for Steps to Promote Tolerance, Unity

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Minister for Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony Chaudhary Salik Hussain has emphasized the concerted steps to promote tolerance and understanding and unity to fight the menace of extremism posing threats to the world’s security and peace.

The Minister expressed these remarks during a symposium titled “From Gandhara to the World: The Legacy of Gandharan Buddhism” held by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs here in connection with Vesakh Day.

He said in today’s world, extremism poses one of the most potent threats to security and peace and called for efforts to promote tolerance and understanding across the world. He said, “Our diversity is our strength and we should stand united against injustice and extremism.”  He called for unity against extremism and injustice, stressing the importance of standing together to preserve global peace and security.

The two-day event brought together religious leaders, experts, scholars, diplomats, historians, and art enthusiasts from Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam, fostering cross-cultural connections and exchange of ideas.

Minister Salik Hussain discussed the ties between nations, showcased by the diverse gathering, and emphasized the significance of intercultural and interfaith dialogue.

On the occasion, Vidura Wikramanayaka, Minister of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs of Sri Lanka expressed the same views, calling for the harnessing of Buddha’s values and cultural diplomacy to unite people and nations. He envisioned Gandhara as a bridge for this purpose, highlighting its historical significance as a hub of civilization and the dissemination of Buddha’s message worldwide.

Wikramanayaka emphasized the importance of revitalizing Gandhara heritage for self-development, aligning with the essence of Buddha’s teachings, not merely as a tourist attraction but as a means of personal growth and enlightenment.
