ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar has congratulated Sheikh Hasina on securing re-election as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh.

In a social media post on X, Pakistan’s Prime Minister said, “I congratulate Sheikh Hasina on her re-election as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh. I wish Sheikh Hasina a successful term in office and look forward to enhanced cooperation between Pakistan and Bangladesh under her leadership.”

It is pertinent to mention here that Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina swept to a fourth straight term in power in Sunday’s general elections that was boycotted by the main opposition, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

Over the past 15 years in office, she has been recognized for revitalizing the economy and the extensive garment industry. She garnered international acclaim for providing refuge to Rohingya Muslims escaping persecution in neighboring Myanmar.

However, critics level accusations of authoritarianism, human rights abuses, curbing free speech, and stifling dissent against Hasina.

The country’s economy has experienced a significant slowdown, particularly since the Russia-Ukraine conflict escalated, leading to higher prices for fuel and food imports. This compelled Bangladesh to seek a $4.7 billion bailout from the International Monetary Fund last year. As of November, the inflation rate stood at 9.5%.
