ISLAMABAD: Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday announced a three-month electricity relief package aimed at reducing tariffs for domestic, industrial, and commercial consumers.

Addressing a ceremony in connection with the Iqbal Day in Islamabad, the Prime Minister said the government had decided to offer the Electricity Sahulat Package for the three winter months of December, January, and February.

“This package will bring substantial reductions in electricity prices for domestic, industrial, and commercial consumers,” he stated.

For domestic consumers, the new package will introduce a flat rate of Rs26.07 per unit for additional electricity usage, offering savings of Rs11.42 to Rs26 per unit. This discounted rate will apply nationwide.

Industrial consumers will see reductions ranging from Rs5.72 to Rs15 per unit under the new winter relief package.

Commercial consumers will benefit from even greater discounts, with savings of Rs13.46 to Rs22 per unit, which translates to a reduction of 34% to 47% in their electricity costs.

In his speech, Prime Minister Sharif highlighted the broader economic benefits of the package, stressing that reduced energy costs would help stimulate economic growth.

“Lower electricity costs will drive industrial growth, boost agriculture, expand business activity, and enhance exports, ultimately strengthening Pakistan’s economy,” he added.

It is also worth mentioning here that Pakistan, last month, renegotiated costly contracts with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and terminated agreements with five of the oldest IPPs to help bring down tariffs.

Pakistan’s manufacturing sector has long expressed concerns about high electricity costs, arguing that inflated power tariffs make local exports uncompetitive in the global market.
