ISLAMABAD: Pakistan President Dr Arif Alvi has asserted that if Nawaz Sharif becomes the Prime Minister in the upcoming general elections, he will be ready to take oath from him, fulfilling the responsibility of the President’s Office.

In a recent Voice of America interview, the President conveyed his confidence in the scheduled February 8 elections after meeting with the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and receiving clear directives from the Supreme Court.

He further said that the country’s judiciary, administration, and political leaders have agreed regarding the timely conduct of general elections on the provision of a ‘level playing field’ for political parties to ensure transparency.

The presence of a caretaker government, following the completion of the national assembly’s term in August, has led to uncertainties about the election timing in Pakistan. President Alvi emphasized that the responsibility for conducting transparent elections and fostering a ‘level playing field’ rests with both the election commission and the caretaker government.

President Alvi Lauds Supreme Court’s decision on election date

President Alvi commended the Supreme Court’s decision, highlighting its wise focus on determining the election date rather than delving into the investigations, which could have complicated the electoral process further.

President Alvi expressed disappointment that despite promises, the international community has not cooperated with Pakistan in sharing the burden of refugees. He defended the decision to repatriate Afghan migrants, citing the economic strain on Pakistan.

Moving on to Gaza, Arif Alvi reiterated Pakistan’s enduring support for Palestinians. Furthermore, he condemned the silence of global leaders on the injustices faced by civilians, especially children, in Gaza.
