ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Railways is taking significant steps to promote inclusivity by offering a 50% concession in rail fares for disabled persons traveling on all express and passenger trains, excluding the Green Line.
To avail of this discount, individuals must present a Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) that displays the disability logo. This initiative not only eases the financial burden on disabled travelers but also extends the same fare reduction to an attendant accompanying visually impaired individuals.
In addition to the fare concession, Pakistan Railways is committed to improving accessibility at railway stations. Major stations are equipped with wheelchairs to assist disabled passengers. Special reservation and booking counters have been designated exclusively for them, ensuring a smoother travel experience. Furthermore, selected major stations provide free access to executive washrooms and restrooms, with plans to expand this facility to 12 more key locations.
Despite these advancements, the state of the railway infrastructure remains a concern. Currently, Pakistan Railways operates 98 trains daily, utilizing 1,180 serviceable coaches. However, a significant percentage of these coaches have surpassed their useful lifespan, leading to increased maintenance costs. The restoration of certain routes, such as the Khushal Khan Khattak Express, remains contingent upon the availability of suitable coaches and an assessment of operational costs and commercial viability.
By implementing these measures, Pakistan Railways aims to create a more accessible and accommodating travel experience for disabled individuals, reinforcing its commitment to inclusivity in public transport.
