ISLAMABAD: On the occasion of United Nations (UN) Day, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar reaffirmed Pakistan’s long-standing commitment to the principles of the UN Charter, emphasizing efforts to prevent war, promote peace, foster global prosperity, and uphold human rights.

He highlighted Pakistan’s significant contributions, noting its status as a leading contributor to UN peace operations since 1960 and its role in hosting one of the oldest peacekeeping missions, UNMOGIP. “Pakistan has been a strong advocate for multilateralism, international cooperation, dialogue, and peaceful resolution of conflicts,” he stated in his UN Day message.

Dar emphasized that this day reflects the international community’s collective commitment to justice, social progress, and safeguarding future generations from the horrors of war. However, he expressed concern that the UN Charter’s vision of universal peace, development, and human rights is currently being undermined by blatant violations, rising geopolitical tensions, increasing Islamophobia and xenophobia, the adverse effects of climate change, and growing poverty.

He pointed out that ongoing conflicts and foreign occupations threaten the UN’s promise to protect future generations from war and ensure self-determination for oppressed peoples. “Urgent action is needed to halt Israel’s campaign in Occupied Palestine and its provocations in the region. Concrete measures must also be taken to uphold the self-determination rights of the people in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), as guaranteed by UN Security Council Resolutions,” he urged.

The Deputy Prime Minister also called for collective efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Agenda and climate goals, advocating for reforms in the international financial system, promoting development, and ensuring global financial equity.

He acknowledged the vital contributions of UN Agencies, Funds, and Programmes operating in Pakistan in supporting socio-economic development.

Dar concluded by reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to enhancing the UN’s role in promoting shared goals of peace, progress, and prosperity worldwide, including its responsibilities as a member of the UN Security Council for the term 2025-26.
