RAWALPINDI: Pakistan’s security forces have killed at least 30 terrorists in an intelligence-based operation (IBO) conducted in the South Waziristan district of northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, the country military’s media wing reported on Tuesday.

On Monday, the security forces conducted an intelligence-based operation in the Sararogha area of South Waziristan district on the reported presence of terrorists, the military’s media wing Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a press release.

“During the operation, our troops effectively engaged the Khwarij (referred to the terrorists of the banned Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan – TTP), 30  Khwarij were sent to hell,” the ISPR statement read.

A sanitisation operation is being carried out to clear the area of any remaining terrorists, the ISPR added. Pakistan’s security forces are determined to wipe out the menace of terrorism from the country, the military’s media wing resolved.

Last week, four Pakistan Army soldiers were martyred, and six terrorists were killed during an operation in the Miran Shah area of North Waziristan.

Pakistan has been grappling with a surge in terrorist attacks, particularly targeting security forces and law enforcement, since the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan in 2021. The border provinces of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan have been the most affected.

Pakistan has repeatedly demanded the Afghan Taliban administration in Kabul to take action against the terror group Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), for carrying out terrorist attacks in the country while using Afghanistan’s soil for planning and executing the attacks.

Islamabad has long accused Kabul of failing to take action against TTP terrorists who hide and operate from Afghanistan.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had also called on the Afghan Taliban to prevent terrorist organisations from attacking Pakistan or any other neighbouring country from the Afghan territory, saying the UN was in discussions with the Taliban authorities in this regard.

In January 2025, terror attacks in Pakistan rose by 42% compared to the previous month, according to data from the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), a think tank.

The report recorded 74 terror attacks nationwide, resulting in 91 deaths, including 35 security personnel, 20 civilians, and 36 terrorists. Another 117 people were injured, including 53 security personnel, 54 civilians, and 10 terrorists.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa remained the worst-hit province, followed by Balochistan. In KP’s settled districts, terrorists carried out 27 attacks, claiming 19 lives, including 11 security personnel, six civilians, and two terrorists.

The tribal districts of KP witnessed 19 attacks, resulting in 46 fatalities, including 13 security personnel, eight civilians, and 25 terrorists.
