PESHAWAR: At least nine female teachers in the northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province were suspended for refusing to participate in the in the district’s anti-polio campaign.

The suspended female teachers had declined to take part in the recently concluded five-day anti-polio campaign in the northwest district of the country.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s health authorities had set a target of vaccinating 6,362,895 children in the first phase of the campaign in all districts of Peshawar, Kohat, Mardan, Malakand, and Hazara divisions, which began on October 2.

In response to their refusal, the Education Department in KP has taken disciplinary action against these teachers, including their suspension. It serves as a stern message that non-cooperation in public health initiatives will not be tolerated.

While the KP Education Department had trained female teachers across Swabi district to administer polio drops as part of the ongoing efforts to eradicate the disease, nine teachers failed to fulfill their duties during the anti-polio campaign.

Out of the nine female teachers facing suspension and disciplinary measures, seven are affiliated with government schools in Razar Tehsil, with the remaining two from Topi Tehsil.

Female Teachers were Trained for Polio Vaccination

It is important to note that the Swabi Education Department had proactively trained female teachers for their roles in the polio vaccination drive by providing them with the necessary training.

In the second phase of the drive, approximately 1,116,811 children in Bannu and Dera Ismail Khan divisions will be vaccinated against polio. This phase is set to begin on October 9 and conclude on October 13.
