KARACHI: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) will acquire and deploy advanced surveillance equipment across the country
Under the initiative, five fixed surveillance radars will be set up in key locations including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Cherat, Dera Ismail Khan, Quetta, Gwadar, and Lahore. Karachi will continue to operate its existing radar station.
In addition to the fixed radars, the PMD will also deploy three portable surveillance radars and 300 automatic weather stations throughout the nation. The distribution of the weather stations will include 105 for Balochistan, 75 for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 85 for Sindh (including Karachi), and 35 for Punjab.
Director General Sahibzad Khan noted that the World Bank is funding the project, which aims to enhance climate change monitoring. The project, valued at Rs 14 billion ($50 million), is set to be completed over the next three years with support from both international experts and local engineers.
