Pakistan to Start Local Manufacturing of SIMs

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is planning to start local manufacturing of SIMs and smart cards for protecting the country from the threat of cyberattacks, creating more employment opportunities and saving valuable foreign exchange.

This was disclosed in an annual report of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority adding that the manufacturing of SIMs at the local level will immensely benefit the economy as millions of SIM cards are currently imported.

The report maintained that digital transformation and the conception of an enabling ecosystem are one of the numerous important objectives of the government, and in the age of digital services, SIMs and smart cards assume key importance.

PTA fully supported the essential role of performing authorization, compliance, and adoption of SIM card manufacturing, etcs., in the modern-day telecom sector.

Meanwhile, the local SIM and smart card manufacturing industry has already become the key sector in many national economies and is playing a crucial role in creating sustainable economic growth.

The role of the telecom industry will not be restricted to the domestic engineering perspective or the transfer of technology.

In the context of the business perspective, it will boost the economy by producing employment opportunities along with generating tax and saving precious Forex.

Moreover, it will also assist in the practical dimension of academia vis-à-vis research and development.
