ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Commerce, Jam Kamal, and UK Trade Commissioner Mr. Oliver discussed strategies to enhance bilateral trade between Pakistan and the United Kingdom.

The UK Trade Commissioner met with Pakistan’s Commerce Minister to discuss collaborative efforts and a business-to-business matchmaking approach to identify and capitalize on growth areas in both nations.

During the meeting, Minister Kamal highlighted the significant potential of Pakistan’s food sector, particularly through value addition. “Pakistan currently can get more foreign exchange by focusing on value addition,” he said.

The Commerce Minister also reaffirmed the Pakistani government’s commitment to expanding trade under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. He commended the Prime Minister’s ambitious export growth plan, which aims to double exports from US$30 billion to US$60 billion.

The minister pointed to the recent success of the FoodAg Expo held in Karachi, which attracted over 800 foreign delegates. “This was the first event of its kind with such a large international presence, and it opened doors to significant business opportunities,” Kamal noted.

In addition to the food sector, Kamal discussed Pakistan’s expanding exports in various sectors including IT, mining, horticulture, and dairy. He particularly highlighted the country’s potential as a future exporter of olive products, stating, “Pakistan is on its way to becoming a significant olive exporter, with vast cultivation underway.”

Mr. Oliver acknowledged Pakistan’s substantial potential and expressed the UK’s commitment to increasing trade volumes between the two countries. Both officials emphasized the importance of the upcoming UK-Pakistan Trade Dialogue, a platform aimed at promoting trade and investment.

Kamal stressed that Pakistan is well-positioned to become a key supplier of food products to the UK market, given its adherence to international standards.
