NEW YORK: A top Pakistani diplomat has called for “concrete steps” by the United Nations to halt the Israeli slaughter of the people in the Gaza Strip, as he underlined that a lasting end to the Israeli-Palestinian war can only come through a two-state solution. Pakistan’s permanent representatives at UN, Ambassador Munir Akram told the UNSC, “It is now time for the UNSC for the entire membership of the UN, to consider step by which to reverse this wanton rejection of peace.”
He said that they hoped the Council will be able, finally, to approve a resolution demanding a complete cessation of hostilities, complete access to humanitarian help for the besieged population of the Strip, and global protection for Palestinians.

Condemning Israel’s defiance of world opinion, Pakistan’s envoy said, “If Israel persists in refusing peace, the UNSC, the General Assembly, and indeed all UN Member nations, must take measures to hold it answerable.
The Pakistani envoy said there are numerous precedents of steps that can be taken to persuade compliance with decisions of the UNSC and the General Assembly. He stressed that it is also time to admit Palestine as a full member of the UN in order to ensure the inevitability of the two-State solution. Palestine presently has observer status at the United Nations. He said that unfortunately, despite world opinion the extremist Israeli leadership remains adamant in continuing this brutal war and refusing the prospect of a Palestinian State and the two-State solution. Ambassador Akram added that this war will consign the Middle East to perpetual battle.
