Pakistan Urges Swedish Companies to Invest in Country’s IT, Telecom Sector

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s State Minister for IT and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja on Thursday urged Swedish companies to invest in Pakistan’s Telecom and Information Technology sectors.

“The present government is taking steps to promote Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in the country, as the growth of ICT is a vital factor for progress,” she made the remarks while addressing the Roundtable on IT and Digitalization with Swedish tech companies held at the Ministry of IT & Telecom.

Ambassador of Sweden to Pakistan Henrik Persson and representatives of Swedish companies including Ericsson, LCC/Talkpool, Need Insights, Quixel, Saab, and Mahaana Wealth Ltd were also present on the occasion.

Shaza Fatima added the Ministry of IT & Telecom is working to fulfil Digital Pakistan vision through multiple cross-sectoral programs including laws, rules, policies and regulations for the enablement of a true digital landscape.

The Minister of State for IT went on to say that the Digital Pakistan Policy is paving the way for taking the Digital transformation of Pakistan to the next level.

She added the government is committed to the provision of quality and affordable ICT services to the masses. She said that Pakistan has a conducive atmosphere for investment.

The official noted Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) is facilitating direct investment in Pakistan, urging Swedish tech companies to invest in the IT & Telecom sector of the country.

During the meeting, detailed views were exchanged with the Swedish delegation on digitalization, connectivity, IT exports, IT & Telecom infrastructure, e-governance, startups, e-rozgar, skills development and gaming and animation.

The Swedish tech companies’ representatives said that Pakistan must expedite steps on the policy level in the IT sector. They said that Pakistan needed to produce skilled people in the IT sector, adding that Swedish companies were ready to provide training facilities to Pakistanis in the IT field.

Ambassador of Sweden Henrik Persson speaking on the occasion  said Sweden and Pakistan are enjoying good ties, and Sweden is keen to boost cooperation with Pakistan in the field of IT and Telecommunication.”
