Pakistan, US Share Conviction to Promote Gender Security: Ambassador Blome

ISLAMABAD: The Ambassador of the United States in Pakistan, Donald Blome, has said that the US and Pakistan shared a conviction that promoting gender security means full participation and integration of women in decision-making, justice, law enforcement and peacekeeping.

Addressing an event on “Reflective Session on Gender-Based Violence Reduction” held by Asia Foundation here on Wednesday, Blome said, “US and Pakistan’s shared interest in promoting gender security as a matter of justice and prosperity”, adding that the United States would continue to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Pakistan in the mutual goal of justice for all.

The ambassador said that it was unfortunate that girls and women continued to face discrimination, violence and harassment solely based on their gender.

The envoy further said that such treatment of women was a violation of their basic human rights and against the principles of justice and equality that both the countries and the United Nations uphold.

Donald Blome recalled that in late 2021, the government of the United States adopted its first-ever national strategy on gender equality, adding that the first US roadmap for tackling gender inequality both in domestic and foreign policies of both countries.

Pakistan’s National Security Policy stated that “providing women and transgender persons a safe environment at home, in public spaces, and at the workplace are priorities for the country”, Blume said.

Pakistan-US Work on Gender-Based Issues

“Let us continue to work together to support a Pakistan that is inclusive, safe, and just for all its citizens,” he added.

The Ambassador appreciated the International Islamic Research Institute (IIRI) for its extensive work and provision of scholarship on gender equity and Sharia principles, along with educating the masses on gender-based issues.

Donald Blome added that the gathering had a significant opportunity to highlight best practices for supporting survivors and boosting awareness among people about the negative impact these crimes have on individuals and society.
