ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday came down hard on the “institutions and politicians” in the country responsible for peace talks with terrorists, cautioning that the menace of terrorism could be spread to other parts of the country if prompt, immediate, and decisive steps were not taken.

The remarks come days after a tragic suicide blast jolted the city of Peshawar, claiming the lives of at least 101 citizens, mostly police officials. The past couple of months has witnessed a sharp increase in terrorist activities in the country, especially in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

While addressing a meeting of the federal cabinet on Wednesday, the Prime Minister said that citizens from Karachi to Peshawar had questions about the resurgence of terrorism in Pakistan.

PM Questioning Reemergence of Terrorism

“Terrorism is rearing its head again,” Shehbaz Sharif said. “The question is, who brought them back?

“Everyone is asking who brought them back. What happened, and how can peace be destroyed? How can the KP province go back into the hands of terrorists?”, The Prime Minister inquired.

Criticizing the decision to negotiate with militants and resettle them during the previous regime, Shehbaz asked, “Who said that they have laid down their arms and will contribute to the growth and development of the country?”

He urged his cabinet members to discuss the “burning issue” thoroughly, calling for introspection.

It is worth noting that on Tuesday, members of the National Assembly regretted the decision to engage the militants through dialogue and resettle them in the country during the regime of PTI, calling it a “faulty” move that was “never endorsed” by parliament.
