ISLAMABAD: A day after ascending Mount Annapurna, Pakistani climbers Naila Kiani and Shehroze Kashif were rescued on Tuesday from the 8,091-metre-high peak after inclement weather disrupted their descent.

Shehroze and Naila summited the world’s 10th-highest mountain in northwest Nepal on Monday. Alpine Club of Pakistan Secretary Karrar Haidry said, “efforts to rescue the two mountaineers who had stranded on Annapurna had been successful.”

“A helicopter dispatched from Kathmandu to the higher camp of Annapurna safely picked up both climbers and took them to Annapurna base camp. Thank you, all dear friends, for your support and assistance,” Haidry.

Naila is the first female from South Asia to scale the Annapurna peak and Shehroze was the first climber to have climbed 11 out of the world’s 14 highest mountains above 8,000 metres sea level. Shehroze aims to summit all 14 peaks above 8,000 metres.

On Saturday, Pakistan’s Sajid Sadpara posted another feather to his cap after scaling up the Annapurna peak without using supplementary oxygen.

Annapurna is considered to be the most dangerous of all 14 high peaks after K2. Its south side is the formidable ice face, while the normal north side route includes massive sections exposed to avalanches and falling seracs.

Nepal’s Mingma G had warned that conditions this season are particularly perilous.

He said, “We had the drought all winter, and now it snows daily. The effect is clear on Annapurna and deep snow, frequent avalanches, and many crevasses”
