ISLAMABAD: The Lahore High Court (LHC) dismissed a petition on Wednesday challenging the government’s decision to potentially close utility stores.

The petition, filed by an employee of the Utility Stores Corporation, contested the government’s move to shut down these stores. However, the LHC, led by Justice Raheel Kamran Sheikh, ruled that the matter falls under government policy and is not subject to judicial intervention.

The court suggested that concerns regarding the closure of utility stores should be addressed in Parliament, emphasizing that legislative action is the appropriate avenue for such issues.

Earlier, on Tuesday, Minister for Industries and Production Rana Tanveer Hussain clarified that there are no current plans to close or dissolve the Utility Stores Corporation.

This statement was made in response to a call attention notice by PPP’s Asifa Bhutto Zardari in the National Assembly, who expressed concerns that the closure could lead to the unemployment of 25,000 employees.

The minister explained that discussions are focused on restructuring the organization, with assurances that employees’ rights will be safeguarded.
