COLOMBO: Pakistani youth Affan Salman emerged as the World Youth Scrabble Champion (WYSC) in Sri Lanka, marking Pakistan’s fifth title win in the prestigious tournament. This victory sets a new record for the most championships won by a single country.
Sixteen-year-old Affan Salman’s exceptional performance at the WYSC was highlighted by his impressive record of winning 19 out of 23 games during the tournament. The championship, which saw participation from 138 players across the globe, reaffirmed Pakistan’s dominance in the world of youth Scrabble.
The World Youth Scrabble Championships, which began in 2006 in Wollongong, Australia, has grown into a significant international event, drawing competitors from countries such as Australia, Bahrain, Canada, England, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Kuwait, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Philippines, Qatar, Singapore, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Trinidad and Tobago, United Arab Emirates, and the United States.
This year’s championship in Colombo was fiercely contested, with players from different backgrounds showcasing their linguistic skills and strategic prowess. The WYSC is open to anyone under the age of 18 as of January 1 of the tournament year.
Pakistan’s consistent success in the tournament underscores the country’s strong tradition in competitive Scrabble. The nation has now set a new benchmark with this latest victory.
The championship’s format involves players competing in multiple rounds, testing their vocabulary, strategy, and quick thinking. Salman’s outstanding performance reflects not only his personal skill but also the rigorous training and preparation that have become a hallmark of Pakistan’s Scrabble players.
