ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Army Chief General Syed Asim Munir has emphatically stated that ‘no large-scale military operation’ is being conducted in the country’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province; rather, “intelligence-based targeted operations are carried out.”

Besides, he added, “Khawarij [anti-State Taliban militants] don’t have any foothold in any part of Pakistan.” He was speaking to the leadership of different political parties from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in Peshawar the other day.

“Our policy is solely and exclusively Pakistan…Afghanistan is our brotherly neighbouring Islamic country, and Pakistan has always desired better relations with Afghanistan,” the Army Chief said.

Pakistan’s only disagreement with Afghanistan, he said, is regarding the presence of the miscreants in Afghanistan and the cross-border terrorism they spread into Pakistan. “This disagreement will remain until the issue is addressed adequately.”

Commenting on corruption, the army chief questioned, “Is spreading corruption on earth not a grave sin in the eyes of Allah?”

He also underlined the need for strengthening the foundations of the State, saying, “If there is a State, there is politics. God forbid, without the State, there is nothing. We all must stand united, without discrimination or prejudice against terrorism.”

He added that when we move forward united, the situation will improve soon. “Humans are prone to mistakes. We all make mistakes, but not admitting those mistakes and failing to learn from them is an even bigger mistake,” he said.

The top general said that there is a special bond between the public and the military. False narratives creating a rift in this bond are fundamentally driven by a specific agenda from abroad.

Consensus among all parties on the National Action Plan (NAP) is encouraging, nevertheless, swift action is required to implement it, he concluded.
