ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Saturday issued warnings of torrential rains in Sindh and Punjab provinces from August 26 to 29. The NDMA’s National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC) advised relevant departments to stay alert.
The NDMA alert indicates that a strong weather system is active over parts of Sindh, potentially causing heavy, short-duration downpours. In Punjab, including the Potohar region and cities such as Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Kasur, Sialkot, Sargodha, Faisalabad, and Multan, isolated rainfalls are anticipated intermittently.
The authority cautions that these torrential rains may lead to flash flooding in local streams and hill torrents across DG Khan, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Kasur, Sialkot, Sargodha, Faisalabad, and Multan. Coastal flooding is also a concern for Makran’s coast and low-lying areas in Dadu, Hyderabad, Badin, and Shahdadpur in Sindh.
The NDMA has urged all relevant authorities and the public to take necessary precautions to mitigate the impact of flooding and heavy rains. Emergency Response Teams are advised to be on alert and mobilize resources for a swift response to any emerging situations. The public is also encouraged to stay informed and follow guidance from local authorities.
This advisory follows a prediction from the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), which forecast heavy rains in southern parts of the country, including Karachi, from August 26 to 29.
The PMD reported that a low-pressure weather system over West Bengal is expected to move westward, bringing strong monsoon currents and heavy rain, winds, and thundershowers to southern areas starting the night of August 25, with periods of very heavy showers until August 29.
