Pakistan’s Exports Increase by 35.33pc to Rs4.3 trillion in First Half

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s exports in the rupee term witnessed an increase of 35.33% during the first half of the current fiscal year as compared to the same period of last year, the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reported on Monday.

Exports during July-December (2023-24) were registered at 4,300,752 million rupees as against 3,177,893 million rupees during the same period of last year, showing an increase of 35.33%, according to the provisional data released by PBS.

On a year-on-year (YoY) basis, the exports during December 2023 surged by 54.59% and were recorded at 799,588 million rupees compared to the exports of 517,240 million rupees in October 2022.

On a month-on-month (YoY) basis, the exports went up by 8.86% when compared to the exports of 734,541 million rupees in November 2023.

The main products of exports during December 2023 were rice other than Basmati (124,040 million rupees), knitwear (103,898 million rupees), readymade garments (84,569 million rupees), bed wear ( 64,119 million rupees), cotton cloth (40,678 million rupees), cotton yarn (26,984 million rupees), towels (24,814 million rupees), rice Basmati (22,888 million rupees), made-up articles, excluding towels and bedwear (16,991 million rupees) and meat and meat preparations (12,472 million rupees).

Pakistan’s Imports

On the other hand, imports during July–December (2023-24) totaled 7,533,700 million rupees as against 6,962,865 million rupees during the same period last year, showing a surge of 8.20 percent.

On a YoY basis, imports into Pakistan during December 2023 amounted to 1,317,463 million rupees as against 1,156,237 million rupees in December 2022, showing an increase of 13.94%.

On a month-on-month (MoM) basis, Pakistan’s imports registered an increase of 1.66% in December 2023 when compared to the imports of 1,295,968 million rupees in November 2023.

The main commodities of imports during December 2023 were petroleum crude (158,260 million rupees), petroleum products (150,888 million rupees), natural gas, liquified (109,516 million rupees), electric machinery and apparatus (63,667 million rupees), palm oil (60,316 million rupees), plastic materials (52,218 million rupees), mobile phones (49,887 million rupees), Iron and steel (41,654 million rupees), Iron and steel scrap (30,426 million rupees) and Motor cars, ckd/skd (29,543 million rupees).
