Pakistan’s Gwadar Airport Key to Strengthen Regional Ties: Chinese Premier

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif praised the completion of Gwadar International Airport as a testament to Chinese leadership’s commitment to supporting Pakistan’s economic development and uplifting its underdeveloped regions.

During a virtual inauguration ceremony for the newly completed airport, Prime Minister Sharif highlighted the achievement as a reflection of the enduring friendship between Pakistan and China. He expressed optimism that the airport would significantly transform Gwadar’s economy and contribute to Pakistan’s overall economic growth.

Both Prime Ministers, Shehbaz Sharif and China’s Li Qiang, unveiled the plaque for Gwadar International Airport, attended by members of both delegations, ministers, military officials, and senior representatives.

Prime Minister Sharif noted that the day marked the signing and exchange of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) between the two nations across various sectors, including industry, commerce, and agriculture. “These MoUs will soon evolve into formal agreements through our joint efforts,” he remarked, thanking Premier Li for his visit, which he viewed as a demonstration of commitment to the bilateral friendship.

Earlier in the day, both leaders held extensive discussions. Sharif expressed gratitude to President Xi Jinping, Premier Li, and the people of China for their generous support in establishing Gwadar International Airport. “This project is another milestone in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC),” he stated, assuring Premier Li of his commitment to working closely towards the successful completion of CPEC’s second phase, alongside ensuring peace and security for both nations.

He commended the dedication of Chinese and Pakistani engineers and workers who contributed to the world-class airport. “This will be remembered as another gift from China,” he added.

Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang congratulated the Pakistani government and people on behalf of the Chinese government, calling the airport’s completion a testament to the collaboration between Chinese and Pakistani engineers. He acknowledged the strong support from the Pakistani public and emphasized that this project would enhance regional connectivity and stimulate shipping and port activities.

Li highlighted CPEC’s vital role in fostering Pakistan’s economic and social development, underscoring the consistent efforts of both nations. He assured that China would continue to collaborate closely with Pakistan to achieve the high standards, sustainability, and quality goals of the Belt and Road Initiative.

Describing the Pakistan-China relationship as “special,” Li stated that their all-weather strategic partnership was deepening further. He reiterated the importance of working hand in hand to accelerate mutual economic development.

Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal expressed heartfelt thanks to Premier Li for his dedication and insightful contributions. He noted that the state-of-the-art Gwadar International Airport symbolized not only economic prosperity but also facilitated regional connectivity, underscoring the strength of the bilateral ties.
