ISLAMABAD: In yet another Twitter spat, Pakistan’s political heavyweights, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Senior Vice-President Maryam Nawaz and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan, exchanged barbs after the Supreme Court’s ruling on the case related to the delay in the upcoming elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The three-member bench of the Supreme Court rejected the government’s request for the formation of a full court to hear PTI’s petition against the Election Commission of Pakistan’s verdict postponing elections for the Punjab Assembly till October 8.
Imran Khan, taking to Twitter, accused PML-N of threatening the Supreme Court and Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP), and called on the people to be ready to take to the streets to protect the rule of law, the Constitution, and democracy. He also urged the legal community to step forward to protect the Constitution and the rule of law.
Maryam Nawaz accuses Imran Khan as a constitution breaker
In response, Maryam Nawaz accused Khan of being a “constitution breaker” and asked who threw shoes on the “photos of judges” and parked trucks outside the courts. She also warned that the marks of Khan’s facilitators would follow them and him.
The exchange of tweets highlights the deep political divide in Pakistan, with both leaders seemingly trying to score political points over the issue.
The delay in the elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has been a contentious issue, with the opposition accusing the government of attempting to manipulate the polls in their favor. The ruling party, on the other hand, maintains that the delay is necessary due to security concerns in the region.
The Supreme Court’s ruling has now put an end to the speculation surrounding the elections, but it remains to be seen whether the political rhetoric between the two parties will die down anytime soon.
