PESHAWAR: In a recently released report, the police in Pakistan’s Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) shed light on the alarming increase in terrorist incidents within the province during the year 2023.

According to the comprehensive police report, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has witnessed a surge in terror-related activities, with a stark escalation from 2021. The data reveals a concerning trend, with a total of 1,327 reported terror incidents from 2021 to the present date.

Breaking down the figures, the report highlights that 2021 saw 260 reported terror incidents, which climbed to 495 incidents in 2022. Shockingly, the year 2023 alone has accounted for 572 terror incidents, indicating a substantial increase in the frequency of such events.

Dera Ismail Khan emerged as the epicenter of terror activities in 2023, reporting the highest number of incidents at 87. Following closely were North Waziristan with 79 incidents, Khyber with 72, and Tank district registering 53 terror incidents within Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

One notable incident took place on December 18 when the police successfully repulsed a terrorist attack on the Chonda police post in Dera Ismail Khan. Armed terrorists stormed the police post in the Kali Wanda area, but the swift and effective response by the police thwarted their plans, leading to the terrorists fleeing the scene without any reported human casualties.

A previous report from the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) highlighted a proactive approach, stating that 837 terrorists had been apprehended in KP. Peshawar, the provincial capital, saw the highest number of arrests, with 245 individuals taken into custody.

The released data underscores the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, emphasizing the ongoing need for strategic measures to counter and prevent terrorism.
