ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Information Minister Murtaza Solangi congratulated the nation for the smooth and orderly conduct of the general elections.

He stated that the caretaker government had upheld its commitment to holding elections within the timeframe set by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

Addressing a press conference alongside Caretaker Interior Minister Dr. Gohar Ijaz, Solangi said that despite speculation and numerous challenges, the government remained steadfast in its dedication to ensuring the elections proceeded as planned.

Addressing queries, Solangi clarified that there was no internet shutdown on election day. He noted that fixed broadband services operated as usual, and social media platforms were accessible to subscribers. Solangi said that internet suspensions were not exclusive to Pakistan, citing instances where numerous countries implemented such measures for security reasons.

Providing context, he highlighted that in 2022, internet shutdowns occurred 187 times across 35 countries globally. He also referenced a neighboring country, known for its democratic credentials, which experienced 84 instances of internet shutdowns.

Solangi lamented the ongoing battle against terrorism in Pakistan, with over a hundred thousand lives lost in the fight. He disclosed that on election day, 16 individuals lost their lives in 61 violent incidents, with an additional 28 fatalities occurring the day prior due to terrorism.

The minister revealed that since January 15 of the current year, there were 47 terrorist incidents, including seven improvised explosive device blasts and 26 grenade attacks.

Responding to concerns, Solangi defended the temporary shutdown of mobile phone services as necessary for safeguarding lives. He referenced remarks from the head of the Commonwealth Observer Group, who highlighted that democracy and elections could proceed even without mobile phones and internet services.

Solangi assured that the ECP’s SMS service 8300 had been operational since January 29, providing voters with necessary information ahead of time. He acknowledged that citizens faced challenges but reiterated that ensuring their safety was the paramount responsibility of security agencies and the Ministry of Interior.

Regarding election outcomes, Solangi noted the significant number of independent candidates elected, indicating the fairness of the electoral process.

Principal Information Officer Dr. Tariq Mehmood Khan also attended the press conference.
