CANBERRA: Pakistan’s star squash player Nasir Iqbal has clinched the Bega Open 2024 squash tournament title held in Australia. Iqbal’s impressive victory over Hong Kong’s second-seed Matthew Lai in the final marks his 17th career title and adds a notable accomplishment to his already illustrious career.
Iqbal dominated the final with a commanding performance, defeating Lai in straight games with scores of 11-6, 11-1, and 11-3. The match, which lasted only 24 minutes, highlighted Iqbal’s exceptional skill and control on the court. His decisive win not only secured him the championship but also earned him a prize money of $12,000.
This victory follows Iqbal’s recent strong performances, as he has won four out of his last five tournaments. His successful run has solidified his position as one of the leading players in the sport. Iqbal’s current form sets the stage for his participation in upcoming tournaments in Malaysia.
Iqbal’s journey to the final was marked by a thrilling semi-final match against Switzerland’s Robin Gadola. In a challenging encounter, Iqbal initially lost the first game but rallied back to win the next three games. The scores of the semi-final were 6-11, 11-4, 2-11, and 3-11.
