ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s National Assembly on Tuesday passed five resolutions, including one urging the government to implement media literacy training in schools and colleges to combat fake news on social and electronic media nationwide.
The media literacy resolution, introduced by Syed Ali Qasim Gillani, emphasized the need to educate students to identify misinformation effectively.
Sharmila Faruqui presented a resolution calling for immediate action to control over-billing by Distribution Companies (DISCOS) across the country.
Aliya Karman moved a resolution urging the government to ensure that all initiatives prioritize inclusivity and diversity, particularly focusing on empowering people with disabilities and supporting marginalized communities.
Rai Hassan Nawaz Khan proposed a resolution advocating for the establishment of Software Technology Parks nationwide to promote IT entrepreneurship among youth.
Sehar Kamran tabled a resolution strongly condemning the ongoing killings of innocent women and children by Israeli forces in Gaza, as well as recent deadly attacks in Lebanon.
Moreover, the National Assembly referred a bill to amend the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, 1973 (The Constitution (Amendment) Bill, 2024) regarding Article 140A to the relevant committee for further discussion.
The bill, moved by MQM leader Muhammad Javed Hanif Khan, was supported by Federal Minister for Information, Broadcasting, National Heritage, and Culture, Attaullah Tarar, who stated that the government had no objections to its referral.
The bill’s proponents, including Syed Mustafa Kamal, highlighted its key features, asserting that the devolution of powers would enable citizens to address local issues more effectively.
