ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Tuesday asked members of the parliament to decide if they wish to continue with the prevailing ‘the law of the jungle’ or legislate for upholding the rule of law in the country.

In an address on the floor of the National Assembly, the prime minister said that the fight is between democracy and fascism. It is high time to make a decision with the collective wisdom.

He said that the parliament needed to legislate on issues concerning the country.

The prime minister said the 1973 Constitution had defined the jurisdiction of the institutions and determined the scope of their functioning.

He said that today this Constitution had become a joke, and the country is going through a serious situation.

The prime minister said Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan was enjoying immunity from the rule of law even though he is persistently blackmailing and abusing the judiciary.

He said that it must be decided to give relief to the nation or the single favored one who does not respect the law.

He said that Imran Khan was habitual of not appearing before courts and he frequently mocked the judiciary, but still getting extensions in bail.

PM recalled that his party’s senior leadership (PML-N) faced imprisonment for fake and baseless cases registered against them, and no leniency was shown to them.

PM Sharif said the three pillars of the State, including the executive, legislature, and judiciary, had to play their due role; otherwise, time would be left with regrets only.

He said the incumbent government is trying to mend the ties with friendly nations that suffered damage during Imran Khan’s tenure.

He said the hypocrisy is at its height as Khan had now hired a US lobbying firm and holding meetings with diplomats.

Continuing his criticism of Imran Khan, he said that during Khan’s tenure, the terrorists returned to their safe havens which is a matter that needed an investigation.
