BAKU: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on the sidelines of the World Leaders Climate Action Summit (COP29) in Baku.
During the meeting, Shehbaz Sharif congratulated President Aliyev for successfully hosting COP29 and praised his leadership in fostering global cooperation on climate change, said a statement released from the Prime Minister house on Wednesday.
The Prime Minister acknowledged Azerbaijan’s proactive role in tackling climate-related challenges and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to working closely with Azerbaijan and the international community to address the impacts of climate change.
He emphasised Pakistan’s vulnerability to climate change, despite contributing minimally to global emissions, and reiterated Pakistan’s dedication to supporting global climate action.
The two leaders also discussed the broader scope of bilateral relations between Pakistan and Azerbaijan.
They expressed their mutual desire to strengthen their strategic partnership, focusing on expanding economic, defence, and cultural cooperation.

Moreover, they explored opportunities for collaboration in technology transfer and joint ventures in renewable energy.
Furthermore, the leaders exchanged views on regional and international developments, including the growing tensions in the Middle East, and underscored the importance of continued dialogue and cooperation to address global challenges.
Earlier today, speaking at the 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif urged the global community to fulfil its climate finance commitments made at the previous two climate summits — COP27 and COP28.
Shehbaz Sharif stressed that these pledges must materialise to support vulnerable countries like Pakistan, which is ranked among the top 10 most climate-vulnerable nations.
