Pakistan’s PM Hails Operationalisation of Gwadar Airport

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday hailed the operationalisation of Gwadar International Airport terming it a major step to strengthen regional connectivity.

The prime minister, in a statement on Monday expressed satisfaction as a Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight landed at the Gwadar Airport, making it the first commercial aircraft to arrive at the facility.

He said the project is an example of Pakistan-China friendship. He added that with the inauguration of Gwadar Airport, another milestone has been achieved to connect Gwadar with Central Asia and East Asia besides providing linkage between the Middle East and Gulf states.

The prime minister said that the opening of Gwadar International Airport would realise the dream of development of Pakistan and the region through the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

“Today, we have come closer to fulfilling the joint commitment of the Chinese President Xi Jinping and Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif for the development of Pakistan and the region through the CPEC,” he remarked.

The prime minister added that the entire nation is grateful to the Chinese leadership and the government as the country always played a key role in the development of Pakistan.

State-of-the-art airport

The state-of-the-art airport, with 3.6km long runway fit for landing of larger aircraft, was completed in December 2024 at a cost of $246 million and is spread over an area of 4,300 acres equipped with international standard facilities, it added.

Pakistan’s Minister for Aviation Khawaja Asif inaugurated the New Gwadar International Airport Monday. He welcomed the flight and presented flowers to the passengers. Airbus and Boeing Aircraft can now land at the New Gwadar International Airport.

The New Gwadar International Airport is equipped with international standards and facilities.  Local media cited Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) as saying that the Airport has been completely operational and has the potential to turn the region into an economic hub.
