LONDON: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met with King Charles III and United Kingdom (UK) Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Friday ahead of the highly anticipated coronation ceremony.

The two-day coronation ceremony is set to take place on Saturday in central London, with over 2,000 guests, including world leaders and global royalty.

The meeting between PM Shehbaz Sharif, King Charles, and Rishi Sunak discussed the need to enhance bilateral relations between Pakistan and the UK.

During the meeting, Shehbaz Sharif proposed the formation of a joint commission led by leaders from both countries to strengthen the bilateral relationship.

He also expressed his gratitude for the UK’s assistance in the aftermath of last year’s climate-induced devastating floods that affected Pakistan.

In response, both King Charles and Rishi Sunak expressed their interest in enhancing bilateral relations between the two countries.

Separately, PM Shehbaz Sharif also attended a meeting of leaders from Commonwealth countries where he called on the leaders to mark King Charles’s accession to the throne as “the dawn of a new era and the opening of fresh avenues and new vistas for the remarkable family of nations known as the Commonwealth”.

Sharif also urged the leaders to reimagine and reinvigorate the Commonwealth and infuse it with greater synergy and a stronger sense of purpose.

The coronation ceremony is expected to be one of the UK’s most significant events ever. Over 29,000 police officers will take part in the event.

The event will also include a no-fly zone over central London. Dress rehearsals for the ceremony took place overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday.

The proposed joint commission between Pakistan and the UK could lead to stronger ties between the two countries, especially in areas such as trade, education, and security.

The meeting between Sharif, King Charles, and Sunak highlights the importance of diplomatic relationships in enhancing global cooperation and addressing pressing issues.

The Commonwealth meeting further emphasizes the need for countries to work in collaboration towards a common goal of promoting peace, prosperity, and sustainable development.
