Pakistan’s PM Orders Authorities to Remain on High Alert During Monsoon

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has ordered all relevant authorities to remain on high alert during the Monsoon season.

The PM issued these directives while chairing a meeting regarding national preparedness for the Monsoon in Islamabad on Tuesday.

He also constituted a high-level committee to deal with any untoward situation during the Monsoon season.

He also directed the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to assist all provincial governments and relevant institutions regarding Monsoon.

The Prime Minister said advisory to the people of affected areas regarding any unexpected situation because of the monsoon should be ensured.

He said information in advance should be disseminated to farmers and people living near the rivers and canals on a daily basis through media.

The meeting was informed that heavy monsoon rains are expected in all the provinces in the first and second week of the month of July. It was further told that a spell of monsoon rains will move from southeast to north this year.

Rains are predicted in the Potohar region and the eastern part of Punjab in the first week of July, while heavy rains are expected in Karachi, Nawabshah, Mirpur Khas, Sukkur and Hyderabad in the second and fourth week of this month.

The meeting was briefed that the spell of monsoon rains in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will remain active till the third week of August.

In Balochistan, heavy rains are expected in the coastal and border areas of Sindh and Balochistan in the second, fourth and first two weeks of July. Rains are also excepted in Gilgit-Baltistan this month.

The meeting was also briefed about the preparations to handle any untoward situation because of the Monsoon rains across Pakistan.

It was briefed that rescue agencies including NDMA PDMA and, the Pakistan Army are on high alert in the affected areas. NDMA has also introduced a Mobile App for monsoon alerts.
