ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday met with President Asif Ali Zardari at the Presidency to discuss proposed constitutional amendments and the current political situation in the country.

The meeting comes as the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) withdrew from their earlier proposal to set up constitutional courts.

Meanwhile, during a special parliamentary committee meeting, chaired by Khursheed Shah, talks were held on the draft of the 26th constitutional amendment.

The coalition parties and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) have agreed to drop the 26th constitutional amendment, which called for the setting up of constitutional courts. Rather, agreed on forming a constitutional bench.

The special committee meeting ended with the government and JUI-F deciding to consult the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on a joint draft. Chief of the JUI-F Maulana Fazlur Rehman will share the finalised draft with PTI leadership.

However, Information Advisor for Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Barrister Saif said that the PTI will resist the proposed constitutional amendment. The PTI has also announced to hold a countrywide protest on Friday against the constitutional amendment.

The parliamentary committee will meet after Friday prayers to continue discussions on the draft.
