Pakistan seeks strong and robust relationships with the Trump administration

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has sent a formal letter of congratulations to US President Donald Trump on his assumption of office.

Similarly, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has also congratulated the new Secretary of State, Radio Pakistan reported.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Foreign Office spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan during a weekly media briefing on Thursday said Pakistan is committed to a strong and robust relationship with the US based on the principle of non-interference in internal affairs.

He also welcomed President Donald Trump’s oath-taking and emphasised that the US-Pakistan relationship is very important, covering multiple areas. He said we look forward to continuing the positive trajectory of these relations.

“Pakistan-US have decades old, very long-standing relations, which we characterize as very important, very critical and very dense also. They cover multiple areas, and we look forward to continuing the positive trajectory of our relations and remain engaged with the new administration,” he said.

Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi is currently in the US and held separate meetings with US Congressmen Joe Wilson and Rob Bresnahan in Washington, Radio Pakistan reported.

During these meetings, he exchanged views on matters of mutual interest and promotion of Pakistan-US relations. He also discussed the establishment of lasting peace in the region particularly the situation in Afghanistan.

Both sides emphasised the importance of increasing trade and cultural exchanges between the two nations to further promote bilateral relations.

Talking to the US Congressmen, the Interior Minister said that the United States is an important strategic partner of Pakistan and Pakistan-US relations span over several decades.

He, while appreciating US President Donald Trump’s address, said it was highly encouraging for global peace and conflict resolution.

Mohsin Naqvi expressed the hope that President Trump’s term would bring new dimensions to Pakistan-US relations.
